As we enter the New Year, we'd like to take a look back over the year 2008 and share some of our chapter's accomplishments with you. In 2008, we were once again recognized as a Superior Merit Award Chapter by SHRM for our accomplishments in the prior year. HRMA has won the Superior Merit Award consecutively since 1998.

At the SHRM Leadership Conference in November, we were also awarded Superstar status for our growth in Membership this year. Seventy-two new members joined HRMA in 2008, growing our membership to 165 in total.

In addition, two of our chapter's initiatives: 1) Our partnership with the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce to offer discounts to its members, and 2) Our partnership with Mercer County Community College to provide instructors for the SPHR/PHR certification prep class were included in the book of Enterprising Leadership Initiatives handed out at the SHRM leadership conference.

    Provided outstanding programs:

    • Put on 10 outstanding chapter dinner meeting programs, including one that honored local companies with an award for HR Department of the Year and an award for Excellence in Diversity; All of our chapter dinner meetings in 2008 were approved for credit by the HR Certification Institute and 5 of the 10 were approved for strategic recertification credit.
    • Organized 8 informative breakfast meetings; 2 by our Leadership Forum and 6 by our Healthcare Forum.

    Supported the HR profession:

    • Our Careers in Transition Committee has organized free networking and support meetings open to all local HR professionals (not just our members). The group meets monthly on the second Monday from 4:30-5:30pm, just prior to the Chapter's regular dinner meeting, at the Hyatt Regency on Rte. 1, Princeton. There is no charge to attend. We alternate between speakers who present on topics of interest to HR professionals in transition, and open networking. We host a Yahoo Group (HRMACIT@yahoogroups.com) to post job openings in Human Resources. To join, you must have a Yahoo account.  Go to Yahoogroups and seek out HRMACIT.
    • HRMA, in partnership with the Mercer Community College Continuing Studies Program, offers a comprehensive Human Resources review course. The 13-week PHR/SPHR Certification Preparation Course is conducted at the College on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to Noon.  The next session will begin on January 20, 2009 and conclude on April 25th. Additional information about the course can be obtained at Mercer Community College, www.mccc.edu/ccs, ph: 609-570-3311 or from Charlene Watler, HRMA- HRCI Coordinator at c.l.watler@att.net, ph: 848-248-8797.
    • Our Student Chapter Committee has worked with Rider University and The College of NJ to support HR professional organizations on-campus. In 2008, HRMA gave scholarships to two worthy students pursuing careers in human resources, and supported sending a student group to the HR Games & Student Conference, sponsored by SHRM.

    Supported our community:

    • In 2008, our chapter donated $1,250 to the SHRM Foundation.
    • We've also given back to our community by allowing local non-profits to address our chapter and make us aware of their needs and how our respective companies might help.

As you can see, the HRMA has worked hard in 2008 to serve the HR professional and to advance the HR profession. I'd like to thank our Executive Board and Committee Chairs in appreciation for all of their time and effort that went into making 2008 such a success.
